What are your spiritual goals for 2023? Are trying to have more self-control with memorizing scripture? Are you trying to read your Bible more? Attend church regularly? Pray for people more frequently?
Let me tell you, as a mom of three girls, it’s tough for me to set these kinds of goals for myself because personally, I want to meet all the goals! All of them.
Of course, this is totally unrealistic and not doable, because I have to remind myself, I have three small kids and I have to lower some of my expectations, which is not a bad thing. I can still create achievable spiritual goals, they’ll just look a little differently.
SPIRITUAL GOALS
Here, you can choose three types of goals to set for yourself going into 2023.
The three types of goals for your spiritual disciplines are under these three categories:
- Prayer
- Scripture
- Local Church
I know that coming up with your own resolutions and ideas can be overwhelming, I mean they’re goals for an entire year, no pressure, right? Don’t be like me and try to accomplish 27 goals with very unrealistic expectations!
So, let me give you a list of ideas for spiritual goals for 2023! Let’s grow your walk with the Lord with these three easy categories! Are you ready?
Let’s begin with the first category!
Prayer Goals
1. Pray at a specific time of the day
This is whatever is best for you, friend. I use to think that praying had to look like sitting crisscross applesauce on my bed with the Bible in front of me and my prayer journal, but I quickly learned, it can be anywhere!
Besides, you can choose a time in the morning or the evening or during the kid’s nap times. If you’re working outside the home, you can do during lunch, before you walk into work, or as you’re leaving. I also suggest that you try to make it time alone, if you can.
2. Create specific prayers for your family
So this is a really sweet idea! You can create your own prayer prompts for each of the kids and your husband, totally based off scripture of course!
I also, started writing on my phone specific prayer requests on specific days for each person in my home and it’s helped me to know what to pray.
3. Write or journal your prayers
Listen, all you do is go buy a simple journal from the Dollar Tree or Walmart and keep it as your prayer journal. You can do this once or twice a week depending on your schedule, to see how and what you’re praying for.
Plus, you can look back to them years later and see how your prayers have changed!
4. Read a book on prayer & incorporate it’s practices
This where I definitely recommend Donald Whitney’s book, Praying the Bible . He has wonderful practices on how to pray through the Bible and then you can incorporate them into your prayer life throughout the year.
I began using his practices and it has helped me to pray more specifically. It’s also helped to me pray for things I normally wouldn’t have prayed for.
Bible Verse Goals
1. Write scripture cards to put in your home
If you love to create, then you can make beautiful scripture to put on the walls of your home or if that’s not your thing, check out Etsy for some very cute wall art!
Another idea is to print digital prints off Etsy because a lot of the time, they’re cheaper. Regardless, the goal is to put the Word in your home!
2. Memorize scripture with apps, cards, games, songs, etc.
Y’all, there are SO many methods and ways that you can memorize scripture these days. Once you’ve picked your favorite, memorize it! Include the kids if you want the extra accountability.
3. Open the Bible with your kids daily
Find a specific time during the day with your kids and get in the Word together. Whether, it’s your morning or evening quiet time or family worship time, get your kids in the Word with you!
4. Read your Bible at a specific time of the day
So, this truly can be at any point of the day. It doesn’t have to be in the morning or the evening, it could be in the afternoon or the drive home from work. Basically, wherever there’s space in your schedule, get it in!
I love this quote from Donald Whitney and Packer’s book, Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life
” The Spiritual disciplines are the God-given means we are to use in the Spirit filled pursuit of godliness…godliness comes through discipline.”
Local Church Spiritual Goals
1. Pray for the people in your church consistently
Listen and look for ways you can pray so that, you can write these requests down and pray for them throughout the week.
You can also pray with them right there in the moment, if not, then find time throughout your week to pray and check in on them!
2. Serve differently or serve more (whatever is best for your family)
Maybe you’re serving too much or too little, or maybe you need to change the way in which you serve the church. But, either way, I want to encourage you to check yourself on how you’re serving this year!
3. Begin serving with a specific ministry
If you have not started serving on a team or in a specific ministry in your local church, then I encourage you to do so! Because there’s always work to be done in any ministry. Jump in!
4. Get involved with the events of the church more
There are events, Bible studies, prayer nights, care groups, game nights etc. that are happening within your local church. If you are in covenant membership with your local church, then you need to be involved with them.
